Joe Balkoski, designer of the original board game classic, worked closely with project leader Mike Inella, whose Stanley Associates team included veterans with a lot of experience developing software for the military. The whole game sparkles with crisp, colorful graphics, and boasts one of the cleanest interfaces on the market. PC Gamer review has the lowdown on this excellent underdog: "Avalon Hill’s new PC edition of 5th Fleet strikes me as one of the finest board-game conversions I’ve ever seen. Sources: various youtube gameplay videos. One of the best board-style wargames ever made, 5th Fleet is a great naval simulation based on Avalon Hill board game of the same name. You can also create your own ships and modify existing to change their capabilities. The various types of ship roles are explained in-game through icons attached to their image representation in-game (like fleet selection menu). That said Skylark is a tanker which although according to manual is both speedy and have range, actual role is to that of supply. Speed increases chance of surprise attack on the enemy (they start with their ships landed). Yellow ships have range (typically) and acceleration (thrust to weight ratios). You have Rook which is ground attack and Gladiator which is more heavy, air superiority ship both marked as red, although they definitely got different roles to play.īlack colored ships are more strategic type of ships, which have role to play on strategic map either by weapons they carry (missiles) or equipment (sensors). These are ship categories but are not, just as IRL, hard definition on what should ship should or can do. What are the color coding on ships, roles, faction origin? It seems like this should be explained, but I may have missed it, was reading through out of order.
